Jews and Humanity: Evolution of a Conversation - Rabbi Daniel Raphael Silverstein

Rabbi Daniel Raphael Silverstein at Uri L’Tzedek on "Jews and Humanity: Evolution of a Conversation"

For this session where we will explore diverse views of Gentiles in key Jewish texts, from our earlier biblical texts, and down through the many generations of rabbinic teachings. Some of the texts we will read together emphasize Jewish chosenness or even superiority, while others emphasize the common attributes and/or destiny of all human beings. As we will see, there is a fascinating story here of the evolution of ideas in various historical contexts. Our primary focus will be Jewish mysticism, including the Kabbalah, which until relatively recently often leaned toward highly particularistic and chauvinistic portrayals of Gentiles. However, as we will explore together, there are some surprisingly radical Chasidic masters, and early Twentieth Century giants such as Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook and Hillel Zeitlin, who laid a foundation for perspectives that many of us may find resonant.
